Work: New bridge Brazil Paraguay

Founded in São Paulo, on May 29, 1969, a CONSTRUBASE has established itself in the execution of large-scale public and private works throughout the country, enabling itself to face the challenges of Brazilian engineering. Challenges that at first presented themselves as obstacles, and that, along the way, turned out to be opportunities for the development of new technologies in various works in different segments.

In 2019, work began on the construction of the new bridge that will connect the city of Foz do Iguaçu – Brazil to Presidente Franco – Paraguay. The project comprises a 760 m long structure, 470 of which are freestanding, supported on two 120 m high pillars on land, making it the largest cable-stayed bridge in Brazil. The new bridge aims to capture the flow of cargo, releasing the well-known Friendship Bridge for tourist purposes.

To start the construction of the support pillars, it was first necessary to establish a structure of the dike type to prevent the flow of water at the base of the pillar, guaranteeing workability.  With a tight deadline for execution and seeking to minimize costs with the initial steps, the company responsible for the project chose the StrataSlope system as the solution for the dam. In addition, it was necessary that the structure of the dike ensure a watertight seal after construction to prevent the base of the pillars from suffering impacts and degrading actions due to the presence of water. The StrataSlope containment system also ensured that these requirements were met.

Project and Solutionçto

The established design conditions led to the design of a containment dyke-type structure, installed downstream of the two supporting pillars to prevent the flow of water during the works and the future protection of the pillars. The dikes have a height of 7.20 m, trapezoidal cross section with 6.5 m at the base and 5 m at the top. The total face area of the two dykes totaled 2134 m². StrataSlope modules with 0.4 m height and StrataGrid geogrids with vertical spacing of 0.4 m and tensile strength of 50 kN/m and 200 kN/m were used. StrataTex non-woven geotextile was also used to separate and protect the materials.

  • The work achieved the expected result of protecting the foundation area of the bridge's pillars against changes in the level of the Paraná River.

  • Optimization in the construction of the containment to start the work of the pillars;

  • Sistema safe, robust and economical;

  • Reduction of expenses with support works;

  • Long-term erosion control and minimal maintenance due to innovative technologies used;

  • Acting as a long-term protection element.airto the pillars of the structure.
